Why It Is Necessary To Counter Terrorism

By Eric Martin

Terrorism can be defined as an unacceptable way of gaining political, religious or ideological interest by intimidating people, especially the civilians. The people who are involved in this act are called terrorists and they are often masked when carrying out their operations. Their places of dwelling are usually covered so that it becomes hard for the government to trace and capture them.

Fighting this ugly incident is hard especially in less developed countries where the use of advanced technology such as forensics is not full blown. As a result, the inhabitants and the country as a whole experience bad times. Some of the things that happen in a place where it is difficult to counter terrorism have been highlighted here.

The first thing that happens is that people lose their lives. In fact, this is obviously the sole aim of many of the terrorist groups. They try to kill quite a whole lot so as to grab the attention of the media and other countries where they aren't operating. It is not possible to quickly forget what happened at the World Trade Centers in the year 2001 where thousands of lives perished. Terrorist attacks have not been at a low ebb since then.

Unfortunately, what people spent their whole life raising are also lost when terrorists attack. Properties such as buildings are usually the major targets and sometimes, they also go to the markets and areas where industries are concentrated. The aim of doing this is to also claim more lives as they strike.

The loss of lives and properties makes poverty pronounced. The terrorists are mindful of doing this so that the people will be more handicapped to fight back. The investments people made in houses and industries are suddenly gone leaving them with no plan for survival. Hunger then sets in leading to more loss of lives.

The government also loses money as they try to curb the menace. They spend a lot to create sophisticated weapons and to buy what they cannot produce from other countries. Sometimes, this makes a country to be indebted to another country because of the high costs of weapons. The country also spends so much on trying to rebuild the lost infrastructure and compensate the families that lost some members.

The government also loses money when foreign investors run away from doing business because of the unsafe environment. Foreign investments are a major source of government revenue in many developing countries so when terrorist attacks are prevalent, they lose a lot. Even developed countries that partner with some world powers may lose the close relationship that exists among them because of the fear of losing their lives and investments in the affected country.

Tourism is also affected and the money the government gets from tourist visitation is lost. Sometimes, the bandits' activities affect those centers that serve as an attraction to tourists. Thus, apart from the fear of losing their lives, tourists lose interest in visiting the country again since there are no more attractions to behold. Unfortunately, this has the tendency of creating mass unemployment as those who work in the tourist locations seem to have no more relevance in contributing their own quota to the nation's development.
