The Life Of Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Fulton John Sheen, was an American bishop born on 8th May, 1895. He become the celebrated archbishop Fulton Sheen. His faith was in the Roman Catholic. The archbishop is well known for his godly teachings on varios TV and radio channels. He was ordained at the Diocese of Peoria, which ushered him into the service for the church. He became a renowned theologian afterwards.

The parents of Sheen were Newton and Delia Sheen. They lived in El Paso, Illinois. He had four younger brothers. When still an infant, it is recorded in history that he had tuberculosis. He got his first chance to serve in church when his family relocated to Peoria, Illinois. His first service to the church was at St. Mary Cathedral as altar boy.

Archbishop Fulton proceeded to Bourbonnais to undertake studies at St. Viator College after earning a high school valedictorian at Spalding Institute. He moved to Minnesota after completing his studies in Bourbonnais. While in Minnesota, he studied at Saint Paul Seminary. He got ordained in 1919 in the month of September. After that he went to Washington to further his studies. When in Washington, he responded to a request by a priest to serve as an altar boy during a mass service.

Catholic University of Leuven located in Belgium was where Fulton received his first doctorate degree. Whie still in Belgium, he also became the first American to receive the Cardinal Mercier award. One year after the award, he pursued further studies in Theology in Rome. This made him earn his second second doctorate degree in Rome.

The priestly life of Archbishop Fulton began in London where he served as an assistant priest at St, Patrick Church, Soho Square. At the same time, he taught theology at Edmund College. While at the college, he met Ronald Knox. In 1926 he took over St. Patrick Parish following a request of Bishop Edmund Dunne. He was returned to Catholic University to teach theology after nine months of service at the parish.

The consecration of Fulton as bishop happened on 11th of June, 1951. The consecration was followed by 14 years of service as an auxiliary bishop in New York. In 1925, he wrote the first of the 73 books he wrote during his entire life. Broadcast of his teachings on radio began in 1930. His teachings are still being aired in radios with thousands of letters being received by the broadcast from listeners all over the US.

The bishop founded the Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation while he was serving in Roshester. The housing foundation lived on during his whole life and is still operating today. Political activities took some of his finances and energy too. He relinguished the bishop position in October, 1969. This came immediately after celebrating the 50th anniversary of life in priesthood.

He got appointed as the Archbishop of Titular See Newport shortly after his resignation. Pope Paul VI himself did the appointment. He wrote several other books, articles, and columns after gaining this position. Seventy three was the total number of books he did.
