How To Effectively Deal With Specially Gifted Children

By Ronald Lewis

Children are a pleasure to watch and have fun with. These little gifts from heaven give luster and life to homes. A residence is awfully silent without the presence of these tiny tots. They are lovable and cute and can cause one to bend down with laughter. Parents endow them with doting care until they grow into adults. However, quite a few are born with defects. This is no cause to worry. Guardians can employ a clinician who has a child centered play therapy certification.

It will take a child to become a toddler before its guardians will be able to detect mental deficiencies. It certainly is during this time when they begin to display aberrant behavior. Parents must be vigilant in dealing with behavior like this as it can be misunderstood or mistakenly assessed as a disease. Consulting a family physician will be the best thing to do. However, there have been known cases when physicians misdiagnose the deficiency causing more problems.

Children become more problematic as they grow. This can be caused by the absence of proper care and guidance from parents who are always at work. It also is very definitive that there is a failure in communications as adults have the tendency to misunderstand and negatively react to kid tantrums. There is a known gap of communication between adults and children and this becomes wider as grownups try to impose their method of communicating.

Communicating with children through verbal expressions or spoken words will hinder the tots to a medium that they are still learning and have no mastery yet. It certainly is restrictive and awkward if you come to look at it. It takes years to develop the speech facility and sadly most adults are blind to this and unconsciously assume that kids already have it.

A child who is playing is its way of expression as speech is that of adults. A careful observation of a kid playing will give credence to the theory that it is its way of exploring things, displaying wishes, role playing, expressing emotions, and playing out experiences. Play centered clinical intervention uses the concept of being with the patients rather than forcing it on them.

Toddlers show more of themselves you talk to them about things that they like. Asking first what interests them, what their favorites pets are, their toys, friends will get a more positive reaction compared to being asked about problems they are facing. This approach is directed at developing the kid. This will let them sort out things by communicating it through an avenue that is comfortable and familiar to them.

Language development in young ones is a step behind the progress of cognitive ability. This is the reason why kids usually have an imaginary friend. They are in a world of fantasy, play, make believe, and imagery. Play therapy employs toys and looks at them as a way of expression that youngsters are comfortable with. The utilization of toys enables tots to eliminate fears, anxieties, ill feelings toward objects rather than towards persons.

In this type of intervention, playing is very significant as it provides the little ones with an avenue of expressing their world. They make use of toys to symbolically represent experiences that they cannot otherwise express in words. This is more comfortable and familiar to them. By acting out bad events through play, they are able to find out for themselves some solutions and are better equipped to cope up with problems.

This practice is governed by the association for play therapy. It has very stringent requirements. Certification includes therapists, therapist supervisors, and school based registered therapists. To be certified one must possess a masters degree in child development and adult psychotherapy or its equivalent field. Applicants must have two thousand or more hours of clinical exposure.
