Options Of Treatment For Dyslexia Carlsbad Patients Need To Know Of

By Andrew McDonald

Dyslexia is disorder that is characterized by difficulties in reading, writing and speaking. It is usually diagnosed in early childhood but may go unnoticed till adulthood in a few circumstances. It is estimated that between 5 and 10 percent of American have some form of dyslexia. The condition has a strong genetic association and tends to run in families. There are a number of options for treatment for dyslexia Carlsbad residents need to know if they are struggling with the condition.

Because the problems tend to present quite early, parents, guardians and even teachers are often the first groups of people to notice. Due to the overlap of the condition with other developmental problems, it is wise to have a professional evaluation and get a definitive diagnosis. This is usually carried out by a child psychologist or psychiatrist. Among the things that need to be established are the family history of the child, how well they can understand written content, their fluency in speech, level of vocabulary and intelligence among others.

Since the condition is usually associated with a structural problem of the brain, correcting it is virtually impossible. It is considered a lifelong condition among those affected. However, there are a number of things that can be done to improve the quality of life of the affected individual. Early diagnosis, is important if any of these interventions are to make a difference.

A child suffering from dyslexia should be enrolled in a special program that allows them to learn at a slower pace than their peers. They should be facilitated to use all their senses so as to make it easier for them. For instance, they may have recorded lessons that allow them to used their sense of hearing or may be given models of letters and numbers that help them use their sense of touch. All these make it easier for their brains to process information.

There needs to be strong social support for any child that has been diagnosed with dyslexia. When everyone else is bullying and ridiculing them, they need a place to run to for encouragement. The parents should make it their responsibility to be the source of this encouragement. They should be made to understand that their challenge is in no way a failure on their part. If this is done properly, their self esteem is likely to get a major lift.

Apart from providing the much needed support, parents can also be quite instrumental in facilitating learning actively. Parents should strive to read to their children loudly as often as possible. This should start as soon as a diagnosis has been made. If they can access any recorded books, the same should be availed to the child so that they can start listening to them. Reading time should be created both for the child and the parent so that the latter serves as an example.

When people live with dyslexia well into their adulthood they acquire various coping mechanisms. Many find easier ways of reading. Some of the issues that may need to be handled at this point are loss of memory and low self esteem which may affect productivity in the work place.

Dyslexia is associated with variable difficulties in reading and writing. It remains one of the most challenging learning disorders to treat. It is worth noting that, it is not related to intelligence and affected persons may be as intelligent their peers or even better. Early diagnosis is key to helping the individual and their family cope with it.
